Reunification Therapy

When a child becomes estranged from a parent, the pain runs in every direction. The child is caught between loyalties. The parent may feel shut out, helpless, or falsely blamed. The other parent may be managing their own grief, anger, or fear. And underneath all of it, the relationship that matters most is at risk.

Reunification therapy is a structured, court-informed process designed to repair the relationship between a child and an estranged parent. It is not about assigning blame or determining what happened. It is about creating conditions where connection can be rebuilt safely, at a pace that protects the child's emotional wellbeing.

Reunification Therapy

Who this is for

Reunification therapy is typically recommended in cases involving:

  • High-conflict divorce or custody disputes

  • Parental alienation or estrangement

  • Court orders requiring therapeutic intervention

  • A child who has resisted or refused contact with a parent

  • Families working to rebuild trust after a period of separation

This process is most effective when all parties — both parents and the child — are willing to participate, even when that willingness is reluctant or court-mandated.

How the process works

Reunification therapy is not a single session. It unfolds over time and typically includes:

  • A thorough assessment of the family system and each member's perspective

  • Individual sessions with the child and each parent

  • Joint sessions as the relationship stabilizes

  • Parent coaching to support the process outside of sessions

  • Collaboration with attorneys, guardians ad litem, and other mental health professionals as needed

Progress depends on the complexity of the situation. We do not set artificial timelines, and we do not move faster than the child's emotional safety allows.

What to expect

The first step is an assessment. Before any joint sessions begin, we take time to understand the history, dynamics, and needs of everyone involved. You will not be asked to sit in a room with the other parent before that groundwork is in place.

Our clinicians approach this work without predetermined conclusions. Whether estrangement involves alienation, justified concerns, or a combination of factors, the goal is the same: to help the child and parent rebuild a relationship that is honest, safe, and sustainable.

A note on court involvement

Reunification therapy often occurs alongside legal proceedings. We are experienced working within court-ordered frameworks and can communicate with legal professionals when appropriate releases are in place. If your case involves a court order for reunification therapy, bring that documentation to your initial contact with our office.

Fees and insurance

Coverage for reunification therapy varies by insurance plan and case context. Contact our office to discuss your specific situation before scheduling.

Common questions

Does my child have to want to participate?

Not initially. Resistance is common and expected, especially early in the process. Part of our work is creating conditions where the child feels safe enough to engage, rather than requiring enthusiasm before we begin.

Can reunification therapy be used as evidence in court?

Our role is therapeutic, not forensic. We do not conduct custody evaluations or provide court testimony about which parent is right or wrong. If your case requires a forensic evaluation, that is a separate process conducted by a different professional.
